Guano Removal

Guano removal – Overview

The removal of bird guano is the cleaning of bird droppings (bird excrement) from the interior of a building following the exclusion of birds or exterior of a building prior to the installation of bird deterrents; in both cases it is important to remove guano. When excluding birds from a roof or internal area of a building it is important to remove any build-up of bird guano to stop smells and reduce the potential for insect-related problems for occupants.

Measures should be taken at all times to protect staff, contractors and the public’s health if working near a guano cleaning site. Although a majority of commercial contractors will offer the client cleaning works on the basis that guano is a major health hazard, in reality cleaning is for aesthetic and practical reasons rather than to control disease.

Buildings provide birds with horizontal ridges for roosting and sheltered spaces for nesting. All birds are known to leave their fecal droppings on building exteriors. Bird droppings cause building masonry to appear dirty, unattractive and overall improperly maintained.
We can undertake a series of preventative methods to help stop further bird infestations and their associated problems helping you to reduce maintenance costs.

Guano is an unsightly health hazard and can be host to insects, parasites and disease. Inhaling the bacteria and funguses in bird droppings can cause immune-compromised individuals to acquire diseases including Cryptococcosis, Histoplasmosis and Psittacosis.
Whilst it’s safe to clean up the odd bird dropping, handling guano of any quantity should be done with care - especially large quantities.
